Elaine thinks that boyfriend David Puddy may be religious after finding Christian stations set on his rental car radio. At the coffee shop, George laments to Jerry about losing respect at a project meeting led by Mr. Kruger after following a good suggestion with a lame joke. Jerry suggests that George use the Vegas showmanship trick of “walking off” after a high note. Elaine tells George and Jerry about her suspicions with Puddy. George tells her to alter his radio presets as a test. Kramer and Mickey Abbott get an acting gig playing sick for some medical students. Jerry’s girlfriend Sophie calls him with the “it’s me” greeting, but he does not recognize her voice. At the next Kruger meeting, George takes Jerry’s suggestion and actually leaves the room after a well-received joke. For their acting job, Mickey and Kramer are assigned bacterial meningitis and gonorrhea, respectively. Elaine confirms that Puddy is religious. Kramer picks up on the showmanship idea and gives an impressive theatrical performance of gonorrhea for the med students. When Sophie uses the unwelcome “it’s me” greeting on Jerry’s answering machine, George suggests he return the favor when he calls back. Sophie does not recognize Jerry’s voice. Thinking that Jerry is a friend named “Ralph” (using the traditional British pronunciation “Rafe”), she reveals that she has not told Jerry about an incident she calls the “tractor story.” Puddy confirms that he is religious and is not concerned that Elaine is not, because he is “not the one going to Hell.”

Jerry buys his dad a $200 Wizard organizer for a birthday present. Jerry and George debate about the race of Elaine’s new boyfriend and that intrigues her - is he black?. Kramer announces his retirement, a Hollywood big shot has optioned his coffee table book about coffee tables. Elaine finds evidence that leads her to believe her boyfriend is black. Susan’s parents see George on the street in the city, during the time he told them he would be at the Hampton’s so as to avoid a Foundation function.

Jerry is woken up early in the morning at his parents’ house and gives his father the Wizard, which apparently Jerry got from a deal at only $50. Morty is only impressed by it being a “tip calculator”, although Jerry claims it does other things. Later he discovers that Kramer has moved to Florida, to join the other retirees. Elaine laughs when Susan’s parents ask her about George’s house in the Hamptons, revealing the lies. Morty, who can’t run for president of the condo association because he was impeached from their previous condo, decides that Kramer should be elected condo board president of Del Boca Vista phase III, so Morty will run things from behind the scenes, like a “puppet regime”. Elaine schemes to try to determine her boyfriend’s race. As George finds out the Rosses knew that he lied, and they allowed him to continue lying, he keeps building on his lie and picks up the Rosses to take them to the Hamptons, to “see who’ll blink first”.

Kramer begins his campaign and the Boca Breeze has good things to say about him. When Elaine’s boyfriend says they are an interracial couple, she is convinced he is black. Kramer receives some bad press from the Boca Breeze; it’s damage control time. Kramer suggests buying each member of the board one of those Wizard “tip calculators”. Jerry knows he can’t get the deal he told his father he’d received, but Kramer says not to worry, Bob Sacamano’s father lives down there and can help them out. Elaine discovers her boyfriend is not black, and that he referred to them as an interracial couple because he thought she was Hispanic. Sacamano’s father comes through with knock-off “tip calculators” called “the Willard”, which are defective, costing Morty and Kramer the election. George and the Rosses reach the Hamptons, where he blinks first and the truth is revealed. The Rosses confirm that they dislike George, and blame him for Susan’s death.

Jerry and George are seated at “Pete’s Luncheonette”, debating the placement of a shirt button. The waitress, Claire, pours each of them a cup of coffee. George frets about whether Claire is giving him regular or decaf, saying he does not want caffeine in his coffee. Claire later implies that she gave him regular to annoy him. Jerry then tells George about a woman he met in Michigan, named Laura, who is coming to New York. Jerry wonders if she has romantic intentions. The two continue to talk about her after they leave the luncheonette and go to the laundry.

The next evening, Jerry tells his neighbor that he thinks he misunderstood the situation with Laura. Jerry then receives a telephone call from Laura, who asks if she can stay overnight at his apartment. Jerry invites her, but is still unsure whether or not her visit is intended to be romantic. George and Jerry continue to debate the issue, with Jerry determined to find the true nature of her visit.

At the airport, George and Jerry continue to try to identify the possible signals Laura might give upon her arrival, with George explaining the meaning of various greetings. However, when Laura arrives, her greeting offers no hints. Jerry and Laura arrive at the apartment. Laura then removes some excess clothing to get comfortable, asks for wine, turns down the light and asks if she can stay over a second night. As Jerry begins to grow confident, the phone rings for Laura. When Laura gets off the phone she tells Jerry: “Never get engaged.”

George’s employer wants to get rid of him, since they now know he isn’t really handicapped and they don’t like him. He has a one-year contract with Play Now, which he will exploit by meeting only the most basic requirement of showing up for work every day.

Jerry and George mock the sounds that Jerry’s girlfriend Claire’s stomach makes during the night chiefly by saying “helloooo” in a loud, booming voice. Jerry envisions the belly button as the mouth and the sound the stomach makes its voice. Because of the “bump-into,” Jerry tells Elaine that she is destined to backslide into her relationship with David Puddy. She bets him $50 that she won’t. The next day Jerry discovers that Elaine didn’t go home last night. He accuses her of seeing Puddy. She says the sex they had was an isolated incident. Jerry agrees, but since the dinner they also had was more of a commitment, he demands that she pay up.

Kramer is tired of seeing all his ideas implemented before he has a chance to implement them himself. He contends that all the little day to day incidental things keep getting in his way and prevent him from realizing his ideas. He gets an intern from New York University, Darin, to help him out with Kramerica Industries, the corporation he had previously set up to develop some of his ideas. With this help he’ll be freed from those day to day activities and be able to develop his ideas, such as the oil tanker bladder.

Kramer is arrested when he is mistaken for “The Smog Strangler,” a serial killer roaming the streets of Los Angeles. Jerry and George contact the police to vouch for their friend. Two policemen in a police cruiser come to pick them up and take them back to the station. On their way, the officers see a man trying to break into a car. They arrest him and put him in the back with Jerry and George.

Kramer is taken to the police station and is interrogated by the lieutenant. He has a nervous breakdown in the interrogation room and is reduced to hysterical sobbing, making it seem like he did the stranglings. While he is being questioned, the lieutenant receives a phone call stating that the Smog Strangler has killed another victim, and so Kramer is allowed to leave. After Kramer is exonerated, Jerry and George decide to return to New York, and Kramer eventually follows them.

Jerry loses a jacket he borrowed for dinner at the Friars Club. Kramer tries polyphasic sleep, also known as Da Vinci sleep. J. Peterman hires a hearing-impaired employee and Elaine suffers the consequences, when she gets loaded with most of his work. Elaine questions the employee’s disability and coerces Jerry to test him. The results are inconclusive, and Elaine has some fun testing him by swearing her love for him. Elaine’s boss overhears, and gives them two tickets to the magic show where Jerry lost his jacket the night before. Elaine is pressured to attend by her boss, who suspects Elaine’s remarks to Bob Grossberg (the practically “deaf” employee) were not sincere.
